So say Wii all!

So the Electronic Entertainment Expo was last week, so all the PS3, 360, and Wii fanboys who were frothing at the mouth for anything to spout off about were appeased when the big three each gave their little presentations on what the future held for each console. Overall I was totally underwhelmed. The Nintendo conference would have put me to sleep. Which they could have measured, because their big announcement was a PULSE METER like at the doctor's office when they take your blood pressure. Apparently the Wii is trying to break into that lucrative medical device market. Making matter worse, apparently Microsoft and Sony aren't far behind because they BOTH introduced motion controls for their systems. I understand that we have to take baby steps to get to the Holodeck on the USS Enterprise or the Danger Room in the X-Mansion, but that doesn't mean I have to care.

I think motion controls are DUMB. Furthermore, I LIKE controllers. I like games that require skill, and the low resolution of the wii motion controls means every game can be won by simply waggling faster than the other guy. And that's DUMB. And you know what else? I'M SICK OF GAMES STARING MARIO!! OR LINK! OR SAMUS! Wow, that feels really good to get off my chest.

Anyway, what say you? Who has a wii and LIKES the thing? What am I missing?

I also threw up a poll, so take it and enlighten me a little bit.

Ed I'm a big fan of your blog, but you're a bit of a hypocrite. You can't praise the original LoZ (in a previous post), then say you're sick of any game starring Link. Any game starring Link as a wolf, OK, but ANY game starring Link? You're bordering on hyperbole (as it assumes that you won't enjoy ANY future game starring that goofy elf-eared bastard; was the original LoZ the only game you enjoyed, or did you like LoZ:LttP?).

It's perfectly fine to be underwhelmed by everything the big 3 present at E3, but why the aggression towards motion controls? Have you ever played Wii Sports when thoroughly intoxicated? Perhaps it's a guilty pleasure, but an entertaining one at the very least (and not to mention one that is more inclusive of folks from the older generation). Beyond that while many games do a poor job at incorporating the waggle into their controls, there are also games that do so rather adeptly and ultimately add to the game play (e.g. No More Heroes, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii).

I like my Wii. Is it the best gaming system I've ever owned? No (that title is reserved for the SNES, that's right PS2 is NOT numero uno...hell I'd probably rate the original NES slightly above PS2, though it's a close race). But are there plenty of entertaining games available for said system? Abso-freakin-lutely.

Haha, COMMENTS!! YES!!

Meghan- Someone still uses wii fit after the first month they bought it!? I think you might have set a record!

Rachel- Yes, the low resolution controls that don't allow skill to factor in is also an issue, haha. Although I assume being married to Toney automatically gives you +10 to video gaming.

Katie- SNES does rule.

Adam- While I agree that I AM most definitely a hypocrite in large areas of my life, video gaming isn't one of them! I guess the point I wanted to get across is that I'm sick of the only good games for any nintendo system having to have Mario or Link in them. While I loved the original zelda, and LttP was probably the best game ever, there's just no reason that 20 years later into my gaming career Mario and Zelda games would STILL be the "system seller" games. Where are the new IPs nintendo? It just feels like nintendo is phoning it in and I'm getting bored helping mario and link save their respective princesses.

And yes, wii sports and drinking is a pretty solid pairing. But so is Drinking Madden. Or drinking Settlers of Cataan. Basically anything is made more awesome if you incorporate a drinking game into it, so that's not a fair point.

As for controls, I'd say mario galaxy and mario kart are ok, but that's mostly because they DON'T use the motion control for main actions. As a peripheral to the main controls motion control can be ok, but all I really wanted was an awesome tennis game and a lightsaber game and they really haven't delivered.

And I can't lie, the PS3 motion controls might actually lead to some cool stuff, but MS's just looks stupid. No controllers means there's no way to incorporate the controls into any REAL game (i.e. any non mini-game game). And seriously, do these companies think my living room is a fracking basketball court!? I have couches, and a coffee table and stuff, where and I supposed to have the room to jump around and waggle myself!?
